December 2022 - The Witching Hour

Image
The final Witching Hour of the year and we go out with a bang starting with a friend of mine you might know him as I have promoted his material before. This would be the very talented occult industrial artist Michael Idehall  with his latest Nevi'im Qaf-XMI . The album constants of various remixes of the titled track from various artists from Chaos Doll and many others.     Some other highlighted tracks are from Dark Sinfonia , an esoteric dark folk/deathrock group from the UK. Normally I don't feature any goth tracks as those are reserved for my Subterranean mix sets unless they have a particular sound. Be that Neue Deutsche Todeskunst (New German Death Art), esoteric or having some extreme sound too harsh for my other mix sets.     I also wanted to highlight two tracks taken from the new neofolk compilation Neue Deutsche Folksmusik Vol. 1 released by House of Inkantation . The compilation is set as name your price via bandcamp. ...

December 2022 - Subterranean Christmas Special

Image
This marks the first ever proper Holiday special for my Subterranean show. I meant to only run this mix for a couple of hours max, accidently did it again and ended up with a 6+ hour mega mix. Oh well, happy accidents. The mix is divided into blocks and sadly isn't timestamped at the publishing of the show. May edit timestamps in the future but sadly I couldn't due to timing. Holiday blocks throughout from goth to industrial, metal including new music and anniversary cues.      We start off with a very goth/post punk Christmas set, mainly classic goth tunes from Alien Sex Fiend 's Stuff the Turkey to 90's hits from London After Midnight to more modern songs like the new yearly Cruxshadows holiday themed song they do. This is something I found out in recent years and had no idea they did this since I never really kept up with the band since their 2006 Sophia EP . This was back in the day when Hot Topic used to sell legit goth/industrial music....

November 2022 - The Witching Hour

Without Venom none of this would be possible. The extreme metal scene, hell, maybe the entire extreme music scene wouldn't be possible without them. Venom were mainly credited to push the musical boundaries and bringing forth the raise of black metal. They even coined the term with their second album, Black Metal . It has now been the 40th anniversary this month of the release of that very same LP. This is a celebration of not only that album but some artists that have been highly influenced by the band such as black metal group Acheron to extreme gothic metal band Cradle of Filth to even industrial rockers The Electric Hellfire Club to name a few.     Aside from this Witching Hour celebrating Venom 's 40th anniversary of this landmark album we have another anniversary that was touched upon. This month was also the 30th anniversary of darkwave/industrial artists Das Ich with their album Die Propheten . Brazilian label Wave Records had the ...

October 2022 - Subterranean Halloween Special

Image
This is probably my most ambitious mix I have ever done. This also marks 1 year since I been doing this and this has been a long wonderful journey. This massive mega Halloween mix is split into blocks. Consisting with the first block of Halloween goth classics which is followed by part two of the mix which is all new goth tunes for the month. The third segment is filled with Halloween industrial tunes. The final part of this mega mix is the dark metal portion. I use dark metal as a general term of course. This part will consist of higher production black metal to gothic metal to maybe even some death metal . All that lo-fi stuff is reserved for my other mix, The Witching Hour .     Part one is an array of goth , darkwave and post punk tunes fitting for the Halloween season or otherwise generally spooky with markers which you will noticed throughout between songs. These markers are there to help you where you are in this behemoth of a mix such ...

October 2022 - The Witching Hour Halloween Special

Image
It's need a full year since I been doing these type of mixes, last year was the Subterranean Halloween mix set, sadly at the time, The Witching Hour wasn't a concept in my mind until the following month. This would be the first proper The Witching Hour Halloween event. Mix set features some classic tunes as well as some current new music fitting for the spooky season as well as some unconventional songs.     I don't post as much death metal as I would like too within my mixes but I'm glad I these two made it onto this special and first of it's kind mix I have done. Haunted is a death metal band from the early 90's, completely underrated with their first self-titled album having a dark horror-like tone with a dark ambient atmospheric intro. With recent times the band reformed and released newer material. The track featured within the mix is from their second release which adds more horror-synth based interludes and a heavy occult-like song structure...

October 2022 - Subterranean Blackened Goth Special 2

Here is another round of hybrid goth rock/post punk I've run into. One of the songs featured within this mix was the one that started off my entire kick for trying to find hybrid bands like these. That would be Mexican artist Vestron Vulture during his early to mid career collaborating with also Mexican death metal group Tormental. Phantom was the song that started it all which made me catalog this particular harsh style of goth. The extreme side of metal and goth/post punk colliding together as one. Down these short years it opened a pathway that was more than enough to put together a mix of these two opposites coming together as one.     Last mix much like this didn't contain any post punk so I decided to add a few bands that harken back in my past when the black metal scene was changing as the US and France spear headed the movement to a whole new era of post black metal . The raise of blackened shoegaze or blackgaze as some people called it was an int...

August/September - Late Summer The Witching Hour 2022

Image
It's been months since the last time I got to put out The Witching Hour . If you are new to The Witching Hour, it primarily focuses on the more extreme side of black/death metal, bizarre and/or harsh industrial music, dark ambient, neofolk and more. As long as it's esoteric, ritualistic, harsh or bizarre, it's got a home here. At The Witching Hour .     One of the artists I've discovered within the mix set Victoria Carmilla Hazemaze who has many, many various projects under her belt. From goth to dark ambient to black metal and more. Careus would be one of them. All her music can be found on her bandcamp page, V.C.H. Music . Another promising black metal project is Italian raw vampyric psychedelic black metal, Medwegya . Track was taken from the Raw Psychedelic Compilation released through one of my favorite label, WereGnome Records . I recommend the label if you are heavy into dungeon synth, black metal, chiptune music or anything weird.    ...

August 2022 - Subterranean Blackened Goth Special

I got the idea of making such a mix years ago back when the black metal scene spawned more and more of these type of bands, post punk infused black metal that is. It was such a sight to behold and a rather odd mixture but one that worked. Over the course of the years more and more black metal bands popped up that showed an interest in goth rock. I guess you could say it was an natural evolution at the time. Going from blackened post punk to a rather mix of goth and black metal. Usually these types of bands that kept making the rounds were deathrock like Devil Master or one that is featured within the mix like Cursed Moon . A great mixture of first wave-like black metal and deathrock/goth rock. I guess you can best describe them as Bauhaus meets Venom .     So many of these bands are more uncommon now, a fringe subgenre but still a subgenre. Enough to be noticed by those within the metal scene and does few from the goth scene that have become aware of their pres...
