Late Summer Send Off 2023

Mistress is back at it with another meg mix. This time covering new music from the end of June to the first week of September. Included are also some anniversaries from certain releases I wanted to touch upon. Also get used to Abandoned Toys' track Where Tides Defy the Moon as I will be using it in the future going forward. Made me think, other DJs and/or podcasters use them, why not me? Plus it's a very excellent song. And as always, citing credit where credit is due.

The goth portion of the mix as always features new music from modern goth scene legends Drab Majesty, Edo and more. What I really want to highlight on is a brand new deathrock band, The Grotesques, spearheaded by none other than Duchess Grotesque. Her influences consists of Deadchovsky/Cinema Strange, Phantom Limbs and Suspiria. As of right now, there is no official bandcamp yet at the time of this blog entry release. Please support this new band as I feel there are many great things that await. For now you can check her and the band out through their official youtube page.

The first anniversary we are touching upon is Bauhaus's fourth and final album during that time, Burning from the Inside released in 1983. To celebrate, this mix features their two club hits She's in Parties and The Sanity Assassin. This is the 40th anniversary of said album. Amazing how goth has evolved from then 'til now. Here is to another 40 years and more.

Another release that really caught me by surprise among the slew of new album would be Shadow Project's Lying Deep. Now this isn't exactly new material but it's always nice to hear archival music getting a remastered and a re-release. This LP are actually The Original Tapes 1988. The album is being released through Cleopatra Records. Nice to see the label released something Rozz related again in such a short time frame. Hopefully they keep this up. Hoping they re-release Rozz William's solo LPs.

Modern darkwave has really been shaping up to be the best since the 90's. I'm really loving the bands experimenting with electro and industrial sounds once again. We got new music from Alien Skin, Hallows, Glaring along with brand new bands as Pain Sigil and Attic Eyes.

In the middle with go into the industrial portion of the mix as there is a blending transition from goth's darkwave block to Pigwill's contribution to an experimental compilation to the synthpop segment of the mix.

Here we got new music from Mind.In.A.Box from their upcoming new album, Black and White. New music also from Missing in Stars as well as another anniversary. We celebrate 40 years of Depeche Mode's Construction Time Again. Interesting to note is this was the one time the band flirted with industrial influences and at some point even toured with EBM legends Nitzer Ebb, furthering the band's association with industrial.

Following we get to the meat of the mix with Romell Regulacio's Razed in Black. If you come across this, we miss your music. The final album of the band, Damaged hit recently in August 20 years. It was such a game changer when the album came out back in 2003. This was the turning point where the dark alternative scene as a whole leaned more in a cyber-like sounding direction. The album was dark, moody and gothic as it was coated in electro-industrial/darkwave. Some highlights of the album were the club hit single Blush. The single at the time was widely introduced to a broader audience through does cheap goth industrial cds you would get at Hot Topic. There through Graver's Paradise was the single amongst a slew of other artists such as Bella Morte, Switchblade Symphony, Gary Numan and more.

The block also includes remixed by Razed in Black as well as their last and final original track which was contributed to the compilation based on Neil Gaiman's work, Where's Neil When You Need Him?.

Deeper into the industrial segment we have new music by Cygnosic who, Astrophysics, Filmmaker who we know that pumps new tracks like a fiend, Klack and much more. Other highlights include the re-release of Chrome Corps (formally Chrome Corpse) with their classic Intimidation Tactics 353 with bonus tracks. Also included is Skinny Puppy as their VIVIsectVI album turned 35 this past month as well.

Near the end of the industrial portion, there is industrial metal as it closes the gap between the mid section and the more extreme tail end of the mega mix. I added Neon Synthesis's cover of Depeche Mode's Everything Counts which can be found as a bonus track on certain albums of Our Empty Room. We got another anniversary as Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe turned an astonishing 25 years. This album was an absolute banger back in the day. And should be noted that I do want to bring back a track from this LP in the upcoming Halloween mix, look out for that one. Right off the heels of White Zombie, this album was a massive success among metalheads and industrial fans alike.

And here we enter the much more extreme side of the mix for you metalheads, goths and rivetheads that stuck around for this part. Celebrating another anniversary date is Dimmu Borgir's Death Cult Armageddon that got them more mainstream fame than any other album. The LP turned 20 years this past month.

New music also included by Blut Aus Nord with another heavy dose of atmospheric avant garde black metal as well as SVRM and Mexico's V.C.H.'s DSBM project Luna Pythonissam. At the end we shift to Lacrimas Profundere's single from their upcoming album.

And closing off we got three anniversaies back to back. Type O Negative's Bloody Kisses turns 30. An album that is widely praised by not only metalheads but goths as well. Slayer's top album from the late 80's South of Heaven hits 34 years and we end off the mix with Death's final album The Sound of Perseverance. This being Chuck Schuldiner's final work with the band as he later succumbed to his cancer. Rest in peace Chuck, we miss you.
